From an feature in Izvestia
Succinic acid is a natural antioxidant
i.e. compound hindering the process of oxidization.
The natural amber, when pulverized, worked just fine against the effects
of a hangover whereas the synthesized succinic acids caused no effect
whatsoever.
“We found out that the molecules of succinic acid could vary in terms
of a spatial structure. The study showed that its conformers had different
chemical and biological characteristics. Those findings enabled us to
carry out the synthesis of succinic acid with specified characteristics
which are similar to those of the natural amber,” said Evgeny Maevski,
B.D., in the interview to Izvestia.
The researchers boosted the characteristics of the remedy by adding
three more acids into its composition: fumaric, glutamic and ascorbic.
All the above are potent antioxidants. Together they are capable of
protecting liver and central nervous system from the destructive effects
of alcohol. A new preparation was tested in the Research Institute of
Narcology under the Ministry of Public Health of Russia.
“We ran tests on the lab animals first, then on the volunteers. The
test results showed that the preparation could reduce the toxicity of
ethyl alcohol,” says Vladimir Nuzhny, M.D., chief of laboratory of toxicology
of the above institute. “It inhibits the production rate of acetic aldehyde,
the main poison of alcohol. Besides, it destroys the protons of hydrogen.
Too many of them when oxidizing in a human organism bring about the
hangover effects, such as headache, nausea etc. Thus the overall aftereffects
of the alcoholic intoxication are curtailed. The remedy produces the
maximum effect when taken prior to alcohol consumption or in the process
of drinking.
